Training Methods
Clicker Training (one of our methods)
Clicker training is a way to teach your dog using positive,
gentle methods.
A clicker, (a small plastic box with a metal tab that makes a
specific clicking noise when depressed), is used to mark the
behavior that you want.
This type of training is just as effective, and usually more, than
traditional training. There is simply more fun and less stress
on both the dog and owner. Clicker trainers, however, do not
allow undesirable behaviors to continue. They are simply
extinguished because they are not reinforced and more
desirable behaviors are put in their place.
Because the clicker is first paired with something the dog
wants (food, toys,, etc.), the dog works to make us humans
"click" and therefore we can get very specific behaviors and
some great tricks. Later on, after the training period is done,
the clickers and food are faded out. So no, you don't have to
carry a clicker around forever.
We do not always use the clicker for teaching behaviors. If the
circumstance does not warrant the use of the clicker, we will
use a marker word such as "yes" in it's place.
We use training methods that utilize positive reinforcement
and negative punishment. Positive reinforcement works by
giving a reward to make something happen again, whereas
negative punishment works by taking something away to
diminish the chance of a behavior reoccurring. Punishment in
this context does NOT mean there is a physical correction.
